Running Philosophy Day 2: Infinite and Finite Games and running

Updated: Jun 20

What are infinite games?

James P. Carse, author of “Finite and Infinite Games,” puts it simply: “A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing the play.”

As mentioned before, to me, running is an infinite game.

Each goal is only there as a landmark to allow the game to happen. This means training for, preparing for, and racing.

However, each training session itself is not only a means to an end but also the end itself.

At least, that's what I would like it to be.

Realizing running as an infinite game takes off the pressure and reintroduces a new mindset, although it doesn't really change the activity itself.
